Date: 26/05/2023

Matheson LLP is delighted to have won the Pro Bono: Outstanding Firm award at the Chambers Europe Awards 2023 in Milan last night.

The citation published by Chambers Europe said that, "In an intensely competitive field, Matheson are rewarded for outstanding commitment and impact of their pro bono work.  Their impressive statistics on hours dedicated had a real world impact, from supporting refugees to children from lower socio-economic backgrounds."

Matheson had been shortlisted for the award with other leading firms from Ireland, Portugal, Spain, the Baltics, the United Kingdom, Greece, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands.

The Pro Bono: Outstanding Firm award celebrates the fantastic achievements of firms and individuals who are furthering the advancement of diversity, inclusion and pro bono across Europe.

Commenting on the win, Michael Jackson, Managing Partner of Matheson said; "Matheson has a real focus on the area of pro bono.  We were a founding signatory of Pro Bono Pledge Ireland in 2020, and were the first Irish law firm to appoint a dedicated pro bono partner in 2021.  For the firm to win such a prestigious award is a welcome validation and recognition of the continued dedication and work that continues to be done by our pro bono partners, as well as the continued commitment from employees right across the firm.  I congratulate them on their success and I look forward to supporting them as they continue their valuable work."

Commenting on the win, Niamh Counihan, Pro Bono Partner, said "This award celebrates the commitment and achievements of Matheson's pro bono volunteers who dedicate their time and professional skills to support the legal needs of those who need them most.  It also honours our pro bono partners including the Irish Refugee Council, The Irish Rule of Law International, FLAC and PILA, and other members of Pro Bono Pledge Ireland, with whom we are privileged to collaborate with to provide free legal assistance".

As a founding signatory and active member of Pro Bono Pledge Ireland, Matheson is committed to providing free legal assistance to those who most require legal representation and advice in our community, and to the organisations that support them.  Our practice is led by our dedicated pro bono partner, supported by our Impactful Business Programme and is afforded the same priority and resources as our other specialist practice areas.  This reflects our firm's ethos and culture.

The Chambers Europe Awards recognise a law firm’s pre-eminence in key jurisdictions in the European region.  They also reflect the winners' achievements over the past 12 months including outstanding work, impressive strategic growth and excellence in client service.  They honour the work of national and international law firms across the region based on the research for the recent edition of Chambers Europe Guide.
