We specialise in large scale, award winning and market-leading projects for both private and public entities - covering oil and gas, renewables, water and waste, airports, roads and infrastructure development, SDZ projects, telecoms, social accommodation, healthcare and education related transactions.

Our Project and Infrastructure Finance team acts for sponsors, financial institutions, public authorities and contractors. Thanks to the diversity of our client base, we are able to anticipate and understand issues and provide innovative and robust solutions for complex deals. We advise all participants in PPP transactions, including governments, sponsors, funders, service providers and construction companies, across a broad variety of infrastructure and energy sectors.

Matheson's multi-disciplinary Project and Infrastructure Finance team comprises over 35 dedicated specialists from Finance and Capital Markets, Energy and Utilities, Planning and Environmental and Real Estate and the extent of our expertise is unrivalled in the Irish market.  We are frequently mandated by domestic and international clients as well as the leading projects and project finance groups of the largest international law firms to advise on the most complex and challenging infrastructure projects.  Our specialist teams are structured to ensure flexibility and timely output delivery against tight deadlines.

  • Irish and international lenders and sponsors on the project financing and refinancing of over 1GW of renewable energy assets in Ireland
  • A large international conglomerate and its local Irish partner on the development of a 200MW Battery Energy Storage System project in the mid-west region of Ireland (this is the one of the largest projects of its kind in Europe)
  • Lenders to the largest ever higher education PPP undertaken by the Irish State. The TUD Grangegorman PPP acts as one of the centrepieces of the Government's policy of making Ireland's education and training service the best in Europe by 2026
  • John Sisk & Son on the development, construction, financing and restructuring of the Greystones Harbour PPP (and associated residential and commercial elements) with Wicklow County Council which was one of the largest and most complex mixed use development PPPs ever undertaken in Ireland
  • Numerous international sponsors, lenders, contractors and operators on Operational PPPs in the road, education, healthcare and justice sectors on an ongoing basis
  • Sponsors and lenders on four out of the five Schools Bundle PPPs
  • Lenders on the project financing of a number of CCGT power generating stations
  • Advising lenders (comprising Bank of Ireland and ING Bank NV, London Branch) on the financing of the M7 / M8 Portlaoise Motorway PPP
  • Advised lenders on the distressed restructuring of an Irish social infrastructure PPP as a result of the collapse of a major UK-based contractor and operator
  • Advising Iridium and its affiliate Dragados on their interests in the M1, M7 / M8, N25 Waterford Bypass, N25 New Ross Bypass and M11 motorway PPPs
  • Advising a multinational fuel storage, refining, retailing and transportation company on its stake in Ireland’s first motorway service areas PPP as awarded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland
  • Advised a leading lender in relation to the provision of facilities to Center Parcs Ireland Limited for the purpose of building Ireland’s first Center Parcs facility in Longford.
